Auto typer for Chrome

Auto type text into browser fields at a pace you control.

Typist is a Chrome side panel. Give it the text once, point it at the field you want that text in, and it types the characters in for you at a speed you set in words per minute.

1. Paste your text. Open the side panel and paste or write whatever you want entered — a sentence, a paragraph, a whole draft.
2. Click the browser field you want it in. A text box, a text area, a rich-text editor, or a Google Docs document.
3. Press Start and it types at your chosen speed. A progress indicator shows how far through the run is. Pause, resume, or stop whenever you want.

Speed is the whole point

Anything from 20 to 400 words per minute, adjustable while you work, with presets at 40, 60, 100, 150, 250 and 400. The default is 60. There are two ways to pace a run: a varied pace, which takes short pauses at punctuation, and a fast steady mode that runs roughly eight times quicker with no pauses at all. Every run is interruptible. Pause it, pick it back up, or stop it outright — you are not committed once Start is pressed.

Which fields it can type into

Typist works in editable browser fields: text boxes, text areas, rich-text editors, and Google Docs documents, which have their own dedicated support in the extension. If you press Start without a field like that in focus, Typist says so and asks you to click into a text field rather than guessing.

It types into one field at a time — the one you focused. It does not click buttons, navigate, switch tabs, or fill several fields in a row. That is the deliberate limit of what it does, and it is what separates it from a browser automation tool.

What people reach for it for

• Long drafts headed into Google Docs. A piece written somewhere else has to be entered into the Docs window, and doing that by hand is a long afternoon. Typist enters it into Google Docs at a pace you set while you do something else.
• Accessibility. If sustained typing is painful or slow, prepared text can go into the page without your hands carrying the whole job. See the accessibility notes.
• Demos and presentations. A form or an editor that fills in at a readable speed reads far better on a recording than text that appears in a single frame. There is a page on that.
• Repetitive browser data entry. The same paragraph, the same address block, the same reply, into field after field, day after day. Save it once and stop retyping it.

Saved snippets, synced to your devices

A snippet is a titled block of text saved to your account. It syncs to your other signed-in devices, so the text you set up on a laptop is there on the desktop machine too. The Free plan holds three; Pro holds as many as you like. Editing a snippet you already own never counts against the limit, and if a Pro subscription ends, the snippets you saved stay on the account and keep syncing — you simply cannot add a new one until you are back under three. Your text stays in the browser

The text you write or paste never leaves your browser. The Typist server is not sent your text, the address of the page you are on, or anything else about that page. To keep count of the daily allowance, the extension sends how many words a run will use and a random id for that run, and the server keeps a small dated record of each run. Our privacy page sets out exactly what that record holds.

There is one deliberate exception. When you save a snippet, that snippet's title and text are stored on the server so it reaches your other devices. Nothing is stored until you press save, and deleting a snippet removes it.

Signing in with Google is required before typing, and the only scopes requested are openid and email.
